NHS Benchmarking Network Monthly Update - March 2016

Welcome to the NHS Benchmarking Network 2016/17 work programme monthly update.

Subscribed members of the NHS Benchmarking Network recieve a monthly update to keep them up-to-date with details of all the projects that will be running in 2016/17. Project registration is now open, if your organisation is a member of the NHS Benchmarking Network you can register for projects and access more information by logging in to the members' area. The table below details when project data collection opens for each of the 2016/17 projects.


COMMISSIONING SECTOR

URGENT CARE

A commissioner based project profiling the demand for urgent care and provision of services across a range of unscheduled care settings. The project also has an enhanced focus on primary care out-of-hours services, with members receiving additional bespoke reports evaluating this high volume service.

PHARMACY & MEDICINES OPTIMISATION (Commissioner)

Medicines optimisation is a key area for potential efficiences highlighted in the Lord Carter report. The project focuses on practices, protocols, tools, local management arrangements, resourcing, medicines optimisation and effectiveness.

PLANNED CARE

A new project for commissioners, the Planned Care project will take a holistic view of elective care commissioning and delivery. The data specification for this project is currently being scoped with members.

ACUTE SECTOR

EMERGENCY CARE

Benchmarking A&E departments and walk-in facilities, the Emergency Care project analyses key issues including; infrastructure provision, senior cover in A&E, optimising patient flow, comparisons of staffing levels, skill-mix, mortality, and the relative costs of providing services.

PHARMACY & MEDICINES OPTIMISATION (Provider)

The Pharmacy and Medicines Optimisation project compares pharmacy services in provider organisations. Topics covered include the structure of pharmacy services, policies and procedures, hours of availability, IM&T, clinical pharmacy, workforce profiles, service costs, home care and case studies.

THEATRES

The Theatres project takes a comprehensive oversight of the NHS operating theatre and includes analysis of; equipment & capital, stock control & costing, decontamination, list management, list availability, turnaround times, IM&T, activity, productivity, cancelled operations, outsourcing, finance, workforce and quality. New this year will be a section on the provision of surgical beds.

OLDER PEOPLE'S CARE IN ACUTE SETTINGS

The Older People’s Care in Acute Settings project, developed in partnership with the British Geriatrics Society, looks at pathways for older people through secondary care, from dedicated support in A&E, assessment units and inpatient care, to supported discharge processes.

RADIOLOGY

The Radiology project provides the most comprehensive analysis of radiology services available anywhere in the NHS. The project reviews modalities, equipment and infrastructure, activity, access and waiting, reporting times, the costs of service, and a series of good practice illustration.

MENTAL HEALTH SECTOR

CHILD AND ADOLESCENT MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services project features a wide range of comparisons including service models, CAMHS demand, access, activity, workforce, finance and outcomes. CAMHS is an area with a diverse approach to outcome measures and the project reports on the different methodologies used. This project delivers the largest evidence base on CAMHS provision available to the NHS.

LEARNING DISABILITIES

Learning Disabilities has been highlighted as one of the nine “must dos” in the NHS Shared Planning Guidance; The Learning Disabilities project aims to aid the understanding of current provision, performance and good practice across both community services and the transition away from long-term inpatient care.

MENTAL HEALTH INPATIENT AND COMMUNITY SERVICES

The Mental Health Inpatient and Community Services project includes detailed analysis of capacity, occupancy, case-mix and patient flow. This project allows participants to track performance against latest standards and test the balance of care between bed and community based services. This project provides the most complete evidence base on mental health services anywhere in the world.

COMMUNITY SERVICES SECTOR

COMMUNITY SERVICES

The Community Services project is the most comprehensive source of community services data available to the NHS. The project covers service access, activity, caseloads, clinical time profiles, workforce, finance, quality and outcomes. The project also assesses progress with community integrated teams.

COMMUNITY HOSPITALS

The Community Hospitals project provides unique comparisons of community hospital service provision and capacity and also develops analysis of wider system linkages to test the effectiveness of community hospitals in making a contribution to managing system demand.

CORPORATE FUNCTIONS

The Corporate Functions project provides a unique reference point for all providers and commissioners in testing performance and value across a range of corporate functions and shared services. Functions analysed include; Finance, Payroll, Human Resources, Estates, IM&T, Procurement, Risk Management, Occupational Health, Clinical Governance, Communications, and administrative support to Directors.
