Older People in Acute Settings: Benchmarking Report

We are pleased to announce that the NHS Benchmarking Network’s “Older People’s Care in Acute Settings Benchmarking Report” is now available from the members’ area.

The Older People’s Report presents the high level findings for the second phase of benchmarking for this project. This topic was identified as a priority area for the NHS Benchmarking Network’s work programme for 2015/16. Whilst data exists looking at the care of older people in specialist areas, for example stroke, there is little data looking at the pathway as a whole, as older people navigate through secondary care. The report covers the following four elements of the acute care pathway:

  • Admission avoidance in A&E
  • Assessment of older people
  • Inpatient care
  • Supported discharge

Within each area of the pathway, the service models, activity, workforce and finance data is explored. Key quality indicators and outcomes are also presented. The report includes data on 2014/15 outturn. Participants also received access to an online benchmarking toolkit available via the members’ area of the Network’s website, and a bespoke dashboard report, with individual Trusts / LHB positions highlighted against the nationally reported position on a number of key metrics.

For this second phase of the project, 49 older people’s services from Trusts and LHBs took part.

For next year’s benchmarking cycle, the data specification will be reviewed in conjunction with the British Geriatrics Society, who have been a key partner in this project. The service user audit, introduced into this second iteration of the project, was successful and will be running again for the 2016/17 work programme. Registration for the third iteration of this project is now open via the members’ area. Data collection for the second iteration will be opening on 19th September until 11th November 2016. We shall be undergoing validation with participants during November and December 2016. The Older People’s feedback and good practice event will be held on 15th February 2017 at etc Venues, 8 Fenchurch Place, London EC3M 4PB.

We hope you find this high level report useful and would welcome any further feedback on possible developments for the next round of benchmarking to cover 2015/16 outturn.
